The national news of rape and murder of a female trainee doctor in the state of Kolkata has totally stunned the country's medical community at a large scale. Following the horrible rape and death of a female trainee doctor in Kolkata, junior physicians have protested and ceased to work at Kolkata's R G Kar Medical College & Hospital inciting national outrage and calling for justice for the victim.
Following the Nirbhaya case incident, which resulted in widespread protests in reaction to the rape and the subsequent death of a trainee doctor in the Indian state of West Bengal, another tragedy rocked India. The last time large-scale protests against sexual assault on women occurred across the country was in December 2012, in response to a brutal gang rape of a medical student in New Delhi. The social movement at the time demanded changes, thus the state changed its criminal laws.
Kolkata rape and murder case: Victim Details
- On 9th August, 2024, Moumita, a medical apprentice or trainee at RG Kar Medical College & Hospital, was brutally raped and killed. She was the one and only victim of the Kolkata murder case.

The Arrest of RG Kar Principal and Kolkata Cop by CBI were made in response to the RG Kar rape investigation's missing evidence and FIR registration delays. By 6:00 p.m. On the day of 9th August, 2024, the parents of the victim had registered as well as filed a complaint after they have found the incident. - The former RG Kar Medical College & Hospital Principal Dr. Sandip Ghosh and officer-in-charge of the Tala police station, Abhijit Mondal, are suspected of being involved in a plot to obliterate evidence related to the August 9 murder and rape within the medical college, of a post-graduate trainee doctor.
- Mondal, who has been questioned by the CBI multiple times since August 13, and Ghosh, who was already in judicial custody after his detention on September 2 in a separate investigation into financial wrongdoing at the hospital, were taken into custody on Saturday in connection with the rape and murder case.
- They are accused of fabricating statements made to investigators during questioning, tampering with evidence, and delaying the submission of the first information report (FIR).
